The Director of the Laboratory is responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality patient care in a cost effective manner by organizing, planning, and directing Laboratory Services


POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES (other duties may be assigned)
1 Ensure the delivery of safe, competent, and high quality professional Laboratory services by assuming responsibilities for the development and implementation of policies and procedures that support the services provided; and committing to developing, monitoring, and evaluating quality through a formalized process.

2 Ensure positive working environment by providing for appropriate development motivation, and supervision of Department staff by assuming responsibility for ensuring adequate and competent staff through ongoing performance feedback, timely annual review of performance, and appropriate disciplinary action within Hospital policies and procedures; evaluating staff development and educational needs and identifies appropriate resources as necessary; providing orientation and in-service training for all staff; and ensuring a safe work environment for staff.

3 Ensure the prudent utilization of human and material resources while maintaining both safety and quality standards by participating in the preparation of capital, operational, and labor budgets. Identifies needed resources and makes those needs known to the organization.
o Plans and prepares annual budgets.
o Plans and prepares expenses and productivity; makes adjustments as needed.
o Recommends and maintains CDM.
4 Ensure the compliance of Department with all applicable agency regulations: TJC, DHS, Title 22, AABB, CAP, CLIA 88, etc.
o Maintain current license/certificate
o Communicates
o Directs/enforces the standards
5 o Ensure maximum productivity and effectiveness. Responsible for staffing, evaluating work performance and corrective action as appropriate in accordance with established policies.


Quality Management
1 Assist with development of Performance Improvement Project in each area of responsibility. Assists in the review & analysis of results. Supports action plans developed from analysis.
2 Prepares reports for Executives and the Board of Directors as needed.


Fiscal Accountability/Productivity
In collaboration with Supervisor:
1 Analyzes statistics and takes appropriate action as necessary.
2 Implements cost containment measures when applicable.
3 Implement revenue enhancement ideas.
4 Demonstrates effective time management.


Regulatory Compliance
1 Monitors compliance with all applicable external agency regulations.
2 Ensures compliance with all personnel to safety standards, Hazardous Materials Management program, Universal Precautions, and Infection Control.


HR Management
1 Demonstrates sound management and leadership principles.
2 Promotes associate growth and development through effective use of resources.
3 Uses effective interviewing skills to hire qualified and compassionate staff.
4 Demonstrates awareness of and ability to apply knowledge of current developments in healthcare
5 Ensure AHMC Seton Medical Center Values are reflected in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the position.
6 Participate in professional organizations and activities.


1 Flexes staffing based on the needs of the Medical Center.
2 Maintains budget and productivity accountability.
3 Implements mechanisms to maintain financial viability of areas of responsibility.


1 Maintains confidentiality of all patient and hospital related communications, documents, and records.
2 Maintains clinical and management skills and expands knowledge base through participating in conferences and seminars
3 Performs required duties in accordance with prescribed hospital policies and procedures.
4 Maintains an awareness of Hazardous Materials and is compliant with safety and infection control policies.
5 In accordance with the mission and philosophy of the AHMC Seton Medical Center Health, performs work consistent with the standards of AHMC Seton Medical Center, the community, and regulatory agencies.
6 Maintains a positive attendance record and is prompt in reporting to work.
7 Assesses personal learning needs and utilizes available resources in self development including new equipment/products used in performance of job.
8 Accomplishes objectives within prescribed time frames by prioritizing and organizing workload.




  • BA/BS Degree and/or equivalent capability through experience and/or education.
  • MSN preferred


  • Previous experience in Laboratory required
  • 5 years management experience in a healthcare setting.


  • Clinical Lab Scientist (CAL) required



  • Organizational & functions of acute care hospital with comprehensive range of patient care experience.
  • Aware of policy and procedures regarding chain of command, job responsibilities, & hospital performance improvement.


  • Ability to work well in a team environment with minimal supervision while exercising effective decision making initiative, diplomacy, tact, confidentiality, delegation and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to design, create, and display reports for timely, accurate and actionable performance improvement studies.
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft office, excel.
  • Use of Electronic Medical Record.
  • Other duties as assigned
