  • Overview

    Director of HIM is responsible for the department continuous effective operation including performance improvement. Develops, plans, and implement process and systems to manage the HIM and Revenue Cycle/CDM, Maintenance and Medical Coding process experience. Directs and administers all activities in HIM and Revenue cycle/CDM and coordinates the departments’ functions in accordance with accepted standards and administrative policies. Demonstrates and utilizes an understanding of the complex federal and state regulations that impact the hospital billing, medical coding, collections, and medical record documentation. Manages the CDM, CDI process and works with the Directors to ensure their Charge Sheets are accurate and charges are being captured appropriately and clinical documentation supports the services provided. Works effectively with physicians, staff, patients, and administration. Works directly with Case Management, Nursing, and Medical staff in continuous improvement of clinical documentation. The Director of HIM is also the Privacy Officer of the facility.


    1. Develops policies and procedures for standardization, control and regulated use of medical information and its availability to users.
    2. Coordinates activities with Medical Staff, Administration, Committees and Department to meet requirements of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and those of Professional Standards Review Organization.
    3. Responsible for identification of case mix issues and develops plan for improvement or corrective action. Ensures the optimization of medical records data while complying with third party payors.
    4. Is responsible for department’s operational excellence; assures department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards.
    5. Plans, organizes and directs the HIM and Revenue Cycle/CDM department within established policies including legal requirements, etc. Responsibilities include managing the denial list, identify corrective actions to eliminate or reduce denials.
    6. Manages human resources to assure quality services and promote positive employee relations.
    7. Is responsible for the fiscal management of departments; assures proper utilization of organization’s financial resources.
    8. Effectively communicates departmental, organization and industry information to staff.
    9. Attends all required Safety Training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, specific job‑related hazards
    10. Follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.
    11. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
    12. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.


    Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Health Information Management or Public Health Mandatory or equivalent.


    Master's degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Health Information Management or Public Health highly preferred.


    Five to seven (5–7) years of management responsibility as a Director / Manager in one of the following departments, medical records or business office in an acute care hospital setting preferred.


    RHIA or RHIT certification required, as determined by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
