This position is responsible for the coding of all patient type records, the abstracting of all patient types, assignment of DRGs and maintenance of required indices.  In addition this position has the responsibilitu of accurate and timely reporting to OSHPD.


This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center.  It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values of AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center.  The employee shall supprt AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center's strategic plan, goals, and direction of the performance improvement plan.  The employee will also be expected to support all organizational expectations including, but not limited to; Customer Service, Patient's Rights, Confidentiality of Information, Environment of Care and other initiatives.


A.  Accurate coding utilizing ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding conventions are reimbursement rules.

B.  Optimize DRG coding using code rules, guidelines, and HCFA Regulations.

C.  Accurate and timely reporting to OSHPD.

D.  Demonstrated skills in use of 3M encoder.

E.  Responsible for meeting the productivity and accuracy standards of the department for coding all patient type records.

F.  Understand and apply all aspects of the Evident abstracting system and seek ways to enhance performance.

G.  Serve as a resource to physicians and other hospital personnel.

H.  Attends department specific education/training, inservices, and staff meetings.

I.   Participates in department specific performance improvement project.

J.  Consistently applies infection control policies/practices.

K.  Meets population specific competencies.

L.  Exhibits excellent customer service to patients/guests.

M.  Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of 3-5 yearrs coding experience in an acute care hospital coding all patient and payor types with emphasis on inpatients and Medicare.  
  • Demonstrated experience in accurately assigning ICD-10, DRG, CPT, and HCPCS coding conventions and reimbursement rules.
  • Knowledge of 3M encoder, preferable.
  • Proficiency with computers and keyboarding skills.
  • Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required. 
  • An associate degree in Health Information Management is preferred. 
  • Additional certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) is also preferred. 
  • Professional licensure in a clinical discipline may also be considered when combined with eligibility to sit for the RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification exam.
