Overview

The OR Technician performs scrubbing duties for operative procedures and assists the Nurse Circulator as directed. He/she is responsible to the Nurse Manager, Surgery and Nurse Manager, CV/Spine Care but is directly supervised by the RN in the operating room to which he/she is assigned for scrubbing and other duties

Responsibilities

POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES (other duties may be assigned)
1. Understands the functions effectively within the aseptic environment, demonstrating expertise in:

·         Pre-operative hand scrub.

·         Gowning and gloving.

·         Practice of aseptic principles.
2.Sets up room for surgical procedures accurately and comprehensively and identifies instrumentation and supplies.
3.When scrubbed, sets up back table according to standardized hospital procedure to facilitate surgical intervention and change-over of relief scrub personnel.
4.Demonstrates ability to concentrate and quickly respond to direction given by RN and/or physician.
5.Maintains and consistently updates surgeons’ procedure preference cards as changes occur.
6.Restocks supplies in assigned operating room or as directed by RN.
7.Sterilizes and disinfects instruments and equipment prior to the surgical procedure.
8.Assists in draping the patient according to established standard to provide an aseptic field.
9.Caries out activities required during the operation pertaining to handling equipment, instruments, sponges, needs, sutures, catheters, drains, dressings, etc. in such a way as to assure surgical asepsis and patient safety.
10.Assists the circulator in preparation of specimens and transporting them to the designated area.
11.Tests operational efficiency of equipment prior to and following each case and notifies the Nurse Manager or designee of problems.
12.Monitors inventories of equipment/supplies as necessary.  Notifies Surgery Buyer of needs.
13.Is attentive to the surgical procedure at all times and anticipates surgeon needs.
14.Develops and suggests improvement in procedures and systems to enhance productivity and implements as approved.
15.Assists as needed in room turnover to prevent surgery delays.  This may include assisting with overall general and terminal cleaning, equipment set-ups, sterilization of various supplies, and transportation of patients as needed. 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS:  

EDUCATION:                                       

High school diploma or equivalent.
Graduation from accredited surgical technologist training program or demonstrates proven experiential knowledge similar to a qualified surgical technician program such as military background. 

 
EXPERIENCE:

Experience or training as an OR Technician –
5 years experience in scrubbing all services, Including Ortho and Spine procedures Required

 

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
Proof of successful completing a Accredited Surgical Tech program
Certification preferred

 

OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE:
Computer literacy desirable
Instrument processing skills desirable
