Overview

Able to work in all basic functions of a CLS in the main lab, blood bank and microbiology. Performs quality control procedures for routine and stat testing of patient samples. Maintains records; performs and records instrument maintenance; troubleshooting instrument and sample problems; regularly utilizes the lab computer for various aspects of daily work; verifies completion of work using the computer. Able to work independently in a generalist capacity while adhering to standard lab practices.

Performance Standard

Regularly performs laboratory procedures in one or more of the scientific sections of the Clinical Lab

a) As a specialist; performs all routine and other procedures.  b)  As a float; performs all routine procedures.  c) Correct procedures done and 100% accuracy within procedure limits, and turnaround as stated in the procedure manual. d)  Sets priorities for the workload to assure that we meet out TAT standards for our ER Initiative.

Performs necessary quality control procedures and maintains records. Performs and records instrumentation

a) 100% compliance with QC protocols for running controls and accepting results.  b) The supervisor is always notified of out of control, discrepant or unexpected results in a timely manner.  c) Records are accurate and up to date. d) 100% compliance with instrument maintenance procedures.

Participates in training of new employees

a.)  Participation as instructed by supervisor. b.)  Able to complete their assignments while closely supervising the trainee. c.) Ensures that the department is properly supervised when assigned the responsibilities of the In-Charge CLS

Troubleshoots instrument problems

a)  Troubleshoots with the help of the hotline.  b)  Troubleshoots with the instrument manual.  c.)  Able to independently detect and resolve instrument issues.  d.) Offers to assist in instrument repairs.

Performs other clinical and clerical duties as needed.

a) Demonstrates the ability and willingness to perform clerical functions at the reception area. b) Able to log in specimens without errors c) All tests completed are properly charged. d) Maintains records in the Laboratory accurately and to Joint Commission Standards. e) Able to take the lead in the front office if necessary and manage the staff when in charge. f)  Checks in Pathology specimens, corrects any incomplete orders and verifies proper preservatives.

Regularly utilizes the laboratory computer for various aspects of daily work. Verifies completion of work by various computer programs.

 a) Familiar with all pertinent computer procedures and contingency procedures. b) Verifies that all assigned work is completed 100% of the time.

Communicates with nursing and other hospital personnel, regarding laboratory procedures, results, etc.

a) Completes annual safety updates within established time frames.  b) Completes general and departmental orientation within established time frames.  c) Attends 100% of mandatory in-service programs.  d) Maintains licensure /certification as appropriate. e) Attends 75% of staff meetings or reads and initials minutes.  f)

 

Keeps up with reading memos without reminders. g) Does continuing education programs on time and with good test scores.

Qualifications

Acute hospital experience required.  Minimum two years experience in a hospital setting as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist required.  Able to maintain customer services standards.  Must be able to work variable days as needed and weekend shifts.  Most of the shifts needed are every other weekend PM shift with some coverage on AM and/or Night shift.  CA licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist; American Society of Clinical Pathologists Certification (ASCP) preferred.  College graduate.  Two years acute hospital experience.
