Overview

The Registered Nurse provides care, treatment, counseling and health education to the obstetrical patient. The RN is responsible for planning and coordination of care across the continuum. This planning and coordination includes meeting and exceeding compliance with core measures, contributes to reduction in LOS, active participation with all aspects of quality, safety and performance improvement activities, collaboration with all the members of the multidisciplinary team in providing outstanding customer service to patients, family members, physicians and the public. Meets and exceeds the Department of Health Service (DHS). The Joint Commission (TJC) and other regulatory requirements. 

 

Labor & Delivery Nurses provide care and support for women before, during and after delivery of an infant.  They are responsible for making sure that the medical and emotional needs of the patient are met throughout birthing process.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors patients before/ during/ and after labor.
  • Performs recovery on patients with either vaginal or cesarean section deliveries
  • Transports recovered patients to Post-partum unit
  • Monitors Contractions and fetal tracings and documents throughout the labor and delivery process.
  • Able to recognize fetal distress based on EFM
  • Performs IV placements and blood draws
  • Knowledge of appropriate lab values
  • Knowlegde of medications utilized in labor and delivery (Magnesium Sulfate, Pitocin, Nubian,  Celestone, Rhogham, Methergine, Hemabate etc..)
  • Monitors and records patient vital signs
  • Performs vaginal exams
  • Assists with epidural placement upon patient request
  • Assist with placing patient is in proper position for delivery & all monitoring equipment is functioning properly 
  • Assists with patient pushing
  • Records time of birth and applicable data on delivery record
  • Immediate care of newborn (clean, weigh, etc.)
  • Gives Apgar

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing certificate. Licensure in the state of California as a Registered Nurse (RN) required. Proficient in oral and written communication skills. Ability to practice leadership, interpersonal skills, communication skills, teamwork, quality improvement and professionalism.

            BLS, ACLS, NRP, AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring required.

1 Year acute experience preferred.
