Overview

Position Summary: 
The Manager Med Surg Tele has responsibility for the administration, organization and professional management of the Acute Care Services (Med-Surg/Telemetry/Oncology Units). Specifically, the position is accountable for the ongoing evaluation of unit operations and quality outcomes; prepares and is accountable for the operational and capital budgets for all areas of responsibility; and ensures that all services meet the needs of physicians, patients, families, and ancillary departments and staff. This position serves as a liaison between Medical Staff and Administration and is accountable to the Country, State and Federal agencies as well as Joint Commission for maintaining compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and standards, and contributing quality patient outcomes while consistently maintaining the highest level of customer service.

 

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Briefly describe the major responsibilities and functions of this position.
Under the direction of the Director of Acute Care Services (Med-Surg/Telemetry/Oncology Units) in collaboration with medical staff and clinical hospital staff the Manager Med Surg provides an optimal practice environment that ensures the delivery of safe, quality patient care.

 

Responsible for planning, directing and managing the patient care delivered to the designated population external to the Med-Surg/Telemetry/Oncology Units Department. Oversees the 24-hour operation of the Med-Surg/Telemetry/Oncology Units with accountability for leadership, staffing, planning, organizing, budget preparation and overall fiscal management, Role models proactive, collaborative working relationships across all hospital functions in an interdisciplinary approach to patient care. Develops programs, policies, procedures, and standards of care to ensure patient's care needs are assessed, evaluated and met.

 

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

1. Develops and manages patient care delivery process for a designated patient population ensuring that policies, procedures, standards of care, and standards of practice are consistent across the nursing organization as well as with current nursing research and practice.
2. Establishes and maintains a positive, professional image. Recognizes staff contributions consistently and fosters educational and developmental opportunities for nursing staff.
3. Uses performance reviews to motivate and encourage staff. Achieves 100% timely performance appraisals for assigned staff.
4. Supports and fosters strong staff morale.
5. Builds effective teams committed to organizational goals, fosters collaboration, and encourages as well as empowers others to achieve. Accurately assesses the strengths and developmental needs of staff and provides timely, constructive feedback that contributes to other's development.

7. Provides positive leadership and oversees supervision to all staff on unit, particularly new employees/less experienced staff.
8. Understands chain of command and uses authority to proactively problem solve. Fosters open communication with staff and encourages the open expression of ideas and opinions, listens well, prepares and delivers clear presentations, conveys information clearly and effectively through both formal and informal conversation and documents. Communicates needs, issues and concerns appropriately, utilizing the chain of command.
9. Ensures a proactive approach for patient rounds/excellent communication/intervention on behalf of patients and families at risk. Facilitates timely follow through on all patient issues/concerns and communicates such to appropriate doctors, managers, and other departments as necessary.
10. Identifies opportunities for process/practice improvement and facilitates implementation of required changes.
11. Facilitates complete and appropriate follow-up of problems and communicates status of unresolved issues to immediate supervisor.
12. Recruits and hires the appropriate people to build a strong team with complementary strengths.
13. Ensures ongoing, positive recognition to staff for contributions and outcomes. Provides timely, accurate information to staff via formal and informal communication venues.
14. Acts as a positive role model for facilitating and implementing change
15. Develops clear and professional communication with physicians Facilitates effective and timely communication of patient-related information to medical staff via nursing, providing immediate follow-up on concerns, and assures orders are performed accurately and timely.
16. Ability to problem solve, analyze situations, think critically, give constructive feedback, supervise and team with others.

 

 

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Business required; Master’s Degree highly desired.
2. Current CA Registered Nurse license.
3. Current BLS & ACLS required.
4. NIH certificate within 90 days of hire.
5. Minimum five years’ experience direct patient care in hospital setting inclusive of three years of acute care experience.
6. Minimum of two years’ experience of demonstrated leadership experience including personnel management, cost reduction, productivity enhancement, and interdisciplinary practice with emphasis on quality/performance improvement within designated department responsibilities.
7. Education and experience in Process Improvement, Change Theory and Team Building.
8. Experience in working and problem solving with physicians, administration, and hospital staff.
9. Clinical background with sound clinical assessment skills, along with the ability to make independent decisions regarding patient care.
10. Highly developed sense of initiative and flexibility, along with good judgment and analytical skills.
11. A management style that is open, team-oriented, collaborative, and based on trust and personal integrity.
12. Effective motivational, written, and verbal communication skills.
13. Experience with technology and ability to participate actively in the selection and purchase of capital equipment.
14. Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory requirements including Title 22 and Joint Commission.
