Overview

Clinical laboratory scientist performs complex laboratory tests on blood, bodily fluids and tissue samples to help diagnose and treat diseases.

Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Performs laboratory test procedures in one or more sections of the Clinical Laboratory, using good judgment and independent actions. Have good communication skills and the ability to effectively provide customer service to all customers. Extended duty and on-call may be required as needed. Needs to act as “lead” CLS in daily performance of duties to include QC management, department operations and inventory supply. Need to be proficient in all laboratory departments as well.
  1. Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Evaluates specimens for acceptability for proper testing.
  • Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
  • Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed.
  • Accurately performs tests as requested on specimens received.
  • Verifies accuracy of results before reporting results.
  1. Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Reports results within time limits established for test procedures.
  • Reports results for stats, abnormal, critical values, and other categories of special requests as defined by laboratory policy.
  • Documents special handling required for test results that meet outlying (established) criteria.
  1. Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure.
  • Records results obtained for quality control testing as defined in test procedure.
  • Appropriately notifies supervisor of discrepant QC results.
  1. Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.
  • Performs maintenance according to the schedule for the instrument/equipment Documents performance of maintenance procedures for the instrument/equipment.
  • Performs calibration of equipment according to scheduled intervals or receipt of reagents.
  • Documents calibration of equipment.
  1. Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
  • Follows established guidelines for troubleshooting procedures.
  • Documents steps taken during the troubleshooting process.
  • Immediately notifies supervisor when unable to solve problems.
  1. Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or body fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals. Participate in CAP survey inspection as well as CAP survey materials submission and testing. Helped with establishing new protocols and procedures.
  • Will wear lab coats, gloves, and protective devices as required when handling specimens.
  • Will follow safety policies for dress.
  • Will report any safety hazards to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Will use protective barrier equipment as required.
  • Will properly dispose of contaminated and hazardous waste materials.
  1. Performs phlebotomy (venipunctures, finger sticks, heel sticks) as appropriate for the patient requiring this procedure.
  • Accurately performs venipuncture procedures when requested or workload demands require doing so.
  • Accurately performs heel stick or finger stick procedures when requested or workload demands require doing so.
  1. When requested, performs duties required for relief in higher classification in supervisor’s absence.
  2. Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Provides complete and accurate responses to safety questions.
  • Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
  • Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
  • If manager/leader, provides for the safety of department employees.
  1. Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment. Ensures a safe environment by complying with established procedures.
  • Attends annual education programs.

  • Will respond to messages in a timely manner.
  • Utilization of computer functions: access correct patient encounter when ordering tests, enters demographic information correctly, and orders appropriate procedure correctly.
  • Completes work assignments on time/readily accepts assignments, as observed by the supervisor.

Qualifications

B.S. or B.A in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent. Minimum Work Experience

Minimum 5-7 years experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a licensed and accredited Acute Care Facility. Required Licenses/Certifications

Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license from the State of California Department of Health Services.Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
