Overview

Performs technical skills and provides assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. Performs similar duties in other areas of the hospital as assigned. Independently scrubs on all surgical procedures. Demonstrates ability to problem solve in relation to the procedure being performed. Applies basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology for optimum surgical patient care. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of patient care concepts. Applies the principles of asepsis during surgical procedures. 

 

Responsibilities

Knowledge of growth and development:

Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation/equipment for all types of surgical procedures ranging from pediatric to geriatric patients, e.g. tonsillectomy, hernia repair and hip replacement

Range of treatment:

Acts as a scrub assistant on various surgical procedures on all ages of patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric

Assessment:

Assesses safety factors for patients that he/she is assigned to such as the position of the patient in relation to their instruments. (Mayo Stand)

 

 

Demonstrates knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment.

 

a)  Sets up room and tray accurately.  b)  Handles equipment correctly.  c)  Prepares instruments and equipment for reprocessing as required.

 

Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures.  Assists in nursing care.

 

a)  Properly assists in the positioning of the patient.  b)  Maintains sterile technique.  c)  Understands result of break in technique.   d)  Maintains accurate surgical counts.  e)  Anticipates surgeon's needs.  f)  Maintains adequately stocked room as assigned.   g)  Assists in applying sterile dressings and casts.  h)  Properly prepares instruments for decontamination according to hospital policy and procedure.  I)  Makes accurate oral reports to circulator as required.  j)  Provides quiet, safe environment.  k)  Transports and moves patients as required.  l)  Completes other duties as assigned.  m)  Conserves material and supplies.  Ensures proper functioning of equipment.  Ensures all equipment is sterile for each procedure.  n)  Is accurate in charging.  Removes all patient charge stickers and places them on appropriate sheet.

 

Self Development

 

a)  Attends monthly in-services 75% of the time.  b)  Attends minimum of one workshop pertaining to O.R.

a) Completes annual safety updates within established time frames. b) Completes general and departmental orientation within established time frames. c) Attends 80% of in-service programs. d) Maintains certification as appropriate.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Two years Surgical Tech experience preferred. Completion of approved Surgical Tech course requires. Current BLS certification required.
