Overview

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of San Gabriel Valley Medical Center.  It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values.  The employee shall support San Gabriel Valley Medical Center’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).

Under the direction of the Director of Medical Staff Services and in adherence to the mission and philosophy of AHMC, performs duties in support of departmental activities and serves as an administrative liaison between the organized medical staff, administration, hospital staff, and governing board, providing professional administrative assistance and resource documentation for the medical staff to complete their Organizational responsibilities as delegated by the Hospital Governing Board.  Maintains extreme confidentiality in all aspects of the job.  Implements the philosophy of AHMC in exhibiting a passion for excellence in the quality of services provided.  Uses computer systems and software to assist in duties.  Provides administrative support for Medical Staff Officers and Clinical Department Chairs, requiring a high level of medical staff administrative knowledge and judgment in assuring medical-legal documentation which support recommended actions deemed by the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules & Regulations.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Provides independent guidance, expertise, knowledge and professional support to the Organized Medical Staff on all responsibilities, delegated by the Hospital Governing Board and as outlined in the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules & Regulations. 
  2. Provides expertise and independent judgment in advising the medical staff on all medical-legal aspects of the Organized Medical Staff responsibilities. 
  3. Coordinates administrative support and serves as a medical-legal resource for the Medical Staff Officers and Department/Committee chairs, as assigned. 
  4. Maintains detailed knowledge of medical-legal aspects of credentialing procedures; communicates independently with applicants regarding documentation requirements to ensure expeditious completion of process. 
  5. Coordinates or processes applications for appointments and reappointments of medical staff and allied health professionals. Oversees orientation of new medical staff members to hospital protocols and services. 
  6. Monitors the progress of physicians through the supervision period, assisting department chairs with the appropriate procedures, forms and time limits. 
  7. Maintains ongoing knowledge of medical staff activities within assigned departments and independently relays, as necessary, information regarding physician status, staff standing, privilege delineation, and supervision status to appropriate personnel, while maintaining confidentiality. 
  8. Provides professional assistance and expertise to the medical staff while maintaining the confidentiality of peer review discussions and other sensitive matters in order to promote medical staff confidence. 
  9. Exercises independent judgment and discretion in recognizing the medical-legal implications of committee actions and medical staff issues. 
  10. Responsible for assuring the accuracy of all physician credential files. Coordinates independently with department chairmen regarding applicant document verifications and follows up on committee actions for application files. 
  11. Assists in training new Medical Staff personnel, and assists with orientation of other new department members. 
  12. Displays actions consistent with the corporate philosophy in terms of mutual support, caring, and respect. 
  13. Maintains and ethical and religious directives for AHMC. 
  14. Performs other related duties, as required. 

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

·         Requires one of the following:  Bachelor’s Degree; or NAMSS Certification as a Certified Provider of Medical Staff Management (CPMSM) or as a Certified Provider Credentials Specialist (CPCS) or equivalent experience/competence to be considered.  College course work inclusive of course work in medical terminology, management, healthcare, documentation and law preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

·         Five years working directly in Medical Staff Services; prefer 3 years as a specialist and 2 year as a coordinator.
