Overview

To act as a front office secretary, reporting, transcribing, filing, billing out-patient and in-patients. Interacts with Doctors on staff reporting results either by phone or fax. Transcribes a variety of dictations involving a substantial amount of medical terminology that is peculiar to pathology. Function effectively with the laboratory information system. Must be able to work under pressure and as needed assist in the back (grossing area) as needed to assist with frozen sections, prepare cytology and assist the pathologist in grossing in specimens.

 

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of San Gabriel Valley Medical Center. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. Responsibilities

National Patient Safety Goal #1: Accurate Patient ID. Always verifies the name and MR number of the patient before processing a specimen or performing the test.

National Patient Safety Goal #1: Accurate Patient ID. Always accurately labels samples and places the time, date and their clearly written initials on the label.

Always accurately transcribes pathology dictation using electronic dictation equipment.

Assures correct spelling of medical terms and other words.

Always utilizes accurate punctuation and grammar.

Accurately transcribes patient identification and physical identification information on to all reports.

Always gives accurate attention to details.

Is always attentive to record keeping and documentation of work performed and required paperwork inherent to the position.

Always faxes appropriate reports to physician's offices.

Always verifies the name and MR# of the patient before collecting the specimen, that the specimen corresponds with the requisition, and before performing the test.

Always ensures the specimen is for pathology and that the specimen and requisition contains the type of specimen and the date of collection.

Always assigns a pathology number to a specimen and subsequently labels the specimen with that number.

Always record in the LIS the patient's name, pathology number, and all of the information needed to positively identify that patient with a particular Specimen.

Demonstrates an ability to assemble and maintain records appropriately in order to increase overall efficiency to maximum potential.

Always inputs all pathology dictation in the laboratory information system under the proper patient name and numbers.

Checks the laboratory information system to verify that all dictation has been properly signed out

Help develop and maintain policies and procedures for the pathology department.

Assist in the orientation and skill development of new staff NA members, (including pathologists) as needed.

Always orders the correct test and, when necessary, completely and accurately completes any requisitions for reference laboratories.

When requested, is able to assist in the training of other transcriptionists.

Uses the LIS and orders correctly rarely having to cancel a test.

Uses the LIS for receipt of samples and rarely receives specimens incorrectly.

Always maintains adequate supplies and demonstrates cost-consciousness while using and requesting supplies.

Always communicates concerns and problems accurately to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.

Seeks guidance and direction, as necessary, for performance of duties.

Always goes to break when assigned to do so by a lead/supervisor.

Participates in department Quality Assurance program.

Performs other duties as assigned by Pathology supervisor and the Medical Director.

Qualifications

Education/Training/Experience

 

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. Good communication skills in English (verbally and in writing).
  3. Competent in the use of the personal computer and word processing programs.
  4. Previous office experience is desirable.
  5. Have good organizational skills

 

Licenses/Certifications

 

        BLS Card (AHA) within 30 days of hire.
