Overview

Regularly performs laboratory procedures in the assigned scientific sections of the Clinical Lab and/or Emergency Department.  Performs necessary quality control procedures and maintains records. Troubleshoots instrument problems. Performs and records instrumentation. Performs other clinical and clerical duties as needed. Regularly utilizes the laboratory computer for various aspects of daily work. Verifies completion of work by various computer programs. Communicates with nursing and other hospital personnel, regarding laboratory procedures, results and overdue tests. Runs and completes all testing that is permitted under the licensure by the State of CA.

Responsibilities

Regularly performs laboratory procedures in the assigned scientific sections of the Clinical Lab.

  • As a generalist; performs all routine and other procedures.
  • Correct procedures done and 100% accuracy within procedure limits, and turnaround as stated in the procedure manual.
  • Pending lists are reviewed with proper hand off to the next shift.
  • Performs, follows policies for and documents specimen rejection.
  • Works only within the scope of training and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the CLS in charge, supervisor or director.

Performs necessary quality control procedures and maintains records.

  • 100% compliance with QC protocols for running controls and accepting results.
  • The CLS supervisor is always notified of out of control, discrepant or unexpected results in a timely manner.
  • Records are accurate and up to date.
  • Maintains inventory of reagents and supplies.

Participates in training of new employees.

  • Participation as instructed by supervisor.
  • Able to complete assignments while closely supervising the trainee.

Troubleshoots instrument problems. Performs and records instrumentation.

  • Troubleshoots with the help of the hotline.
  • Troubleshoots with the instrument manual.
  • Able to independently detect and resolve instrument issues.
  • Offers to assist in instrument repairs.
  • 100% compliance with instrument maintenance procedures.

Performs other clinical and clerical duties as needed.

  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to perform clerical functions at the reception area.
  • Able to long in specimens without errors.
  • All tests completed are properly charged.
  • Maintains records in the Laboratory accurately and to Joint Commission Standards.
  • Checks in Pathology specimens, corrects any incomplete orders and verifies proper preservatives.

Regularly utilizes the laboratory computer for various aspects of daily work. Verifies completion of work by various computer programs.

  • Familiar with all pertinent computer procedures and contingency procedures.
  • Verifies that all assigned work is completed 100% of the time.

Communicates with nursing and other hospital personnel, regarding laboratory procedures, results, etc.

  • Communicates in a clear, courteous and professional manner.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: AA Degree in a California approved specialty.
  • Successful completion of Medical Laboratory Technician Internship.
  • Minimum Experience: 6 months laboratory experience preferred.
  • Required Certification/Registration: CA Licensed Medical Laboratory Technician.
