Overview

The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the overall management and scientific integrity of the Laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Pre-analytic Services) and the Coastside Laboratory.

 

 

Responsibilities

POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES (other duties may be assigned)
1. Responsible for the delivery of Laboratory Services:
a. Assures that daily section operations comply with laboratory, hospital, and other relevant regulatory policies.
b. Develops and implements departmental policies, procedures, and standards that support the services provided.
c. Assures that turn-around times for section's delivery of laboratory results are within established guidelines.
d. Supervises internal and external quality control of each section and documents corrective action when needed.
e. Reviews monthly QC and quality checks for all departments and ensure all documentation, reviews, and signatures are completed in a timely manner in adherence to policies and regulatory requirements.
f. Reviews (and documents) policy and procedure manuals on an annual basis.
g. Submits revisions and updates of policies, documents, forms, etc. to the Laboratory Director for approval.
h. Prepares CLS and Lab Assistants work assignments and schedules ensuring adequate daily staffing.
i. Helps monitor inventory of all sections to ensure supplies are adequate for patient testing.
j. Work the bench(es) as needed and required.
k. Investigate delays, IMPs, discrepancies, issues, etc.

 

2. Manages Human Resources:
a. Counsels/disciplines section employees as required.
b. Performs employee performance appraisals.
c. Coordinates training/orientation and assures competency for each employee in each section.
d. Interviews and recommendations in the employee selection process, coordinate associate training/orientation within the section, and identify appropriate resources as necessary.

 

3. Manages financial resources:
a. Responsible for the forward direction of the sections by evaluating new instrumentation and test procedures through cost justification and scientific validity.
b. Responsible for the financial accountability of the section for yearly operating, capital and personnel budgets.
c. Coordinates and recommends CER for section.
d. Monitors section's productivity, making adjustments as needed.

 

4. Performs and reports laboratory analytical procedures as needed.
a. Operates instrumentation in accordance with instrument and departmental SOP.
b. Performs and reports tests according to SOP.
c. Recognizes unacceptable specimen conditions and results, and initiates. appropriate corrective action, including consulting with Pathologist if appropriate.
d. Maintains clean, neat, and organized work area.

 

5. Develops projects that demonstrate a commitment to monitoring and/or evaluating quality through a formalized process.
a. Oversees section Quality Assurance program.
b. Ensures compliance with all regulatory standards.
c. Participates in the hospital's performance improvement process to continuously improve the quality of the patient care and service delivery.
d. Ensures that laboratory incidents and corrective actions are consistently document.
e. Manages safety program within the laboratory section.

 

6. Demonstrates positive behaviors toward patients, families, physicians, and all co-workers.

c. Partners with team members to meet the needs of the customer.

 

7. When delegated in the absence of the Director, attends meetings and resolves issues as needed.

 

8. Acts under the direction of Laboratory Director in other necessary activities if consistent with training, education and professional ethics.

 

9. Other duties as assigned.

 

10. Abides by facility’s Code of Conduct and HIPAA compliance.

 

11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Baccalaureate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related health science specialty. Masters degree preferred.

 

TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
● Five or more years bench experience, plus two years supervisory experience in a hospital laboratory setting (preferable).
● Experience with regulatory compliance, especially College of American Pathologists laboratory standards.
● Experience utilizing a Laboratory Information System, preferably Sunquest.
● Detail knowledge of laboratory operations and terminology.
● Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
● Exceptional problem-solving ability
● Demonstrated skill in communicating with physicians, nursing staff, laboratory staff and other laboratory customers.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Computer literate - strong skill in use of Word and Excel applications.
● High degree of initiative and professionalism required.
● Demonstrated ability and success in personnel management and team building essential. Demonstrated technical knowledge and skill in laboratory testing methods.

 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSE
● Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license
● ASCP Medical Technologist certification highly desirable
