Overview

Under the direction of the CNO, provides daily and strategic administrative oversight/service line leadership and operational control to patient care units under his/her area of responsibility.
 
This position requires providing 24-hour Patient Care  and nursing services including managerial/administrative supervision to nursing unit, which provides care/service across the continuum of care in a manner that, demonstrates an understanding of the functional and/or developmental age of the individual served.
 
This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Whittier Hospital Medical Center. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support Whittier Hospital Medical Center’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).
 

Responsibilities

Service/Leadership

 

  • Makes effective decisions that move the organization toward its vision and achieve the organization’s goals.
  • Integrates department services with other departments to assure coordinated hospital operations.
  • Communicates effectively in writing and verbally to ensure understanding.  Leads through listening, questioning, etc. 
  • Supports staff through monthly department meetings (10/year).

  • Assumes a proactive role in the reduction of workers’ compensation injuries in the department by appropriate and timely employee education, investigations and follow-up.  Assures employees utilize proper ergonomics (body mechanics, exercises, and workstation).

  • Understands and complies with employment laws (EEO, FMLA, ADA, etc.).
  • Effectively coaches, counsels and disciplines employees.  Provides ongoing feedback to staff.

  • Effectively administers policies and procedures regarding safety, environmental health, and risk management.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of turnover relative to department.  Works to minimize controllable turnover.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:  Graduate from an accredited school of nursing; AA or Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field.


Minimum Experience:  5 years as RN; 1 year in supervisory role in Emergency Department or ICU.


Required Certification/Registration:  Current California RN License; BLS; ACLS; PALS, Certification in clinical area preferred.
